MRC has been retained by the Mohawk Bridge Consortium to provide Independent Engineering services for the $66M rehabilitation of the Mercier Bridge in Montreal. This major crossing linking the Kahnawake reserve and Chateauguay on the south shore to the island of Montreal will have its deck replaced on three major approach ramps as well as substantial steel repairs and strengthening of the steel superstructure. The design-build project will be divided into two contracts with an estimated total Contract value of $130M making it one of the largest bridge rehabilitation projects undertaken in Canada.
MRC’s design for the Rapid Replacement received of the Highway 417 Island Park Drive Overpass has been recognized by a 2008 Canadian Consulting Engineering Award of Excellence in the Transportation Category. MRC’s innovative design permitted two 650 tonne bridge superstructures on a busy highway corridor to be replaced overnight. In announcing the award, the Association of Canadian Engineering Companies (ACEC) and Canadian Consulting Engineer Magazine described the project as “an astonishing feat that sets a new standard across Canada.”
MRC was retained by the City of Ottawa to provide engineering services to rehabilitate the Kanata Pedestrian Bridge which suffered significant structural damage to the east side bottom HSS chord over the Highway 417 Westbound lanes as a result of a collision with a high load (i.e. dump truck with a raised box).
MRC’s Ottawa Office staff completed a detailed investigation and structural evaluation and subsequently delivered a fast-track design to repair the bridge. The innovative design incorporates temporary post-tensioning to reinforce the structure during structural steel removals and repair of the damaged bottom chord without reducing vertical clearance to the users of the Highway and without welding to the bottom chord. The structural repairs are scheduled to be completed by the end of November with architectural repairs to be completed in Spring 2009.
Public Works and Government Services Canada has retained MRC on a two-year mandate to complete comprehensive detailed and annual inspections at the MacDonald-Cartier, Alexandra, Chaudieres Crossing, Des Allumettes and Des Joachims major interprovincial bridge crossings between Ottawa-Gatineau, Pembroke-Des Allumettes and Rolphton-Rapides-des-Joachims, respectively. The assignment, which also includes live load and seismic evaluations of the structures to the requirements of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code will be undertaken in MRC’s Ottawa office.
The Confederation Parkway Bridge, designed by MRC, was recognized by a Mississauga Urban Design Award of Merit for innovation, community and City wide scale. The City of Mississauga and MRC’s architectural/landscape sub-consultant, du Toit. Allsopp Hiller, were also recognized with this award.
The MMM Group has been retained as the Independent Engineer for a $1.5 billion project to extend Quebec’s Highway A-30 to bypass the City of Montreal. Quebec’s Autoroute 30, parts of which already exist in some form, will handle traffic between the junction of existing Autoroute 30 and highway 138 in Chateauguay on Montreal’s south shore and the junction of Autoroute 20 and 540 in Vaudreuil-Dorion west of the city. The Ministère des Transports de Quebec (MTQ) decided to deliver the design, construction and operation of the 35 km autoroute undertaken as a public-private partnership (P3) and has awarded the contract to Nouvelle Autoroute 30, a private consortium of companies with concessionaires, contractors and engineering firms assembled for the project. MRC’s Ottawa and Mississauga offices are providing several key staff for the MMM Group’s project team on this major project.
The 10th anniversary of the Toronto Canstruction competition, held in the lobby of the TD Office Tower; marked the first entry by MRC/Ecoplans into this unique competition highlighting the creativity and generosity of Toronto’s design professionals. Teams build structures entirely out of canned and packaged food for the benefit of the Daily Bread Food Bank. Started in 1992 in the United States, Canstruction came to Toronto in 1999 and continues to grow. The MRC/Ecoplans Team spent many hours fundraising through 50/50 draws, bake sales, and organizing food drives in preparation for the big event. A significant donation of over 1,450 cans by Sobeys also contributed to the team’s design – a traffic signal! Toronto Canstruction raised nearly 77,000 pounds of food which will be donated to the Daily Bread Food Bank in Toronto; MRC/Ecoplans is proud to be part of this amazing contribution!
The Hwy 417 Clyde Avenue Overpass rapid replacement project, designed by MRC, was completed on August 2-3, 2008 in record time during a 15 hour closure of the highway. The existing twin superstructures were replaced with two new wider steel girder superstructures following widening and rehabilitation of the existing abutments. The rapid replacement was completed two hours faster than the award-winning rapid replacement of the Island Park Drive Overpass in 2007. (See attached photos)
Wind testing on a model of MRC’s design for the East Hamilton Waterfront Link Bridge was recently completed at RWDI’s wind tunnel in Guelph. MRC is currently completing the design for this unique signature pedestrian bridge that will span the QEW and the Red Hill Creek between Burlington Street and the Red Hill Valley Parkway Interchange. The 200m long four-span structure will feature an 80m long single tilted steel arch main span. Tendering is anticipated in 2009.
